How many sheets of paper will the Genesis cut at one time?

Genesis trimmers are designed for precision and accuracy. They are not made for volume cutting. Most Genesis owners cut only two sheets of card stock at once because they like a smooth, precise cut. With the smooth way the cutter wheel glides on its slide bar, cutting large quantities of paper even one sheet at a time is not a chore! Being able to cut in both forward and backward directions helps make the job go even faster.

Can I cut matboard with a Genesis trimmer?

No, the Genesis blade is designed to trim paper, photographs and card stock. Matboard is too thick and too dense for the Genesis cutter wheel. Cutting matboard can damage both the cutter wheel and the flat blade on the Genesis.

How do I decide which size I should buy?
When deciding which trimmer size to order, two considerations are most important: the size of the materials you'd like to cut, and the space you have available for the trimmer. Genesis trimmers are square, so the footprint will be slightly larger than 12"x12" for a 12" trimmer, slightly larger than 16"x16" for a 16" trimmer, etc.

12" trimmer
The 12" trimmer will cut standard 8-1/2"x11" paper and cardstock with ease. It is a good choice for people who are short on space because it has a small footprint, but the 16" trimmer is more versatile.

16" trimmer
This is my favorite size, and the most popular size among my customers. This versatile size is a favorite among scrapbookers because it will cut 12" x 12" scrapbook paper in both directions. The 16" trimmer will also cut legal size paper in both directions, and provides a generous work space that is well worth the additional cost.

Which accessories do I really need?
The Genesis trimmer works beautifully without any of the optional accessories. Depending on what you plan to cut with your trimmer, some of the accessories can make cutting easier or save you time. Below is a description of each accessory and its purpose. You can decide which accessories, if any, you need for the type of cutting you will be doing.

Edgelight
The edgelight is a great addition to your Genesis trimmer.
The edgelight is a metal housed electric fluorescent light fixture which attaches to the underside of the trimmer. Its light shines upward through your photographs, paper and light- to medium-colored card stock to illuminate the exact cutting line. The edgelight is great for people with vision problems and for people who don't always cut by measurements, but by "eye". It allows you to cut exactly to the edge of a graphic for a full bleed, helps when you are cutting in between two items on a page, etc. The trimmer cuts beautifully without an edgelight, but the light is a very helpful (and popular) feature.

The edgelight is specially designed to prevent the transfer of heat from the light to the trimmer table. I often leave my edgelight on all day, and the trimmer table never feels hot to the touch.

Guide bar
The guide bar (the metal bar on the left in the photograph) is a handy option. It allows you to set up a "wall" against which you put your paper when you will be doing repetitive cutting. For example, if you have 75 invitations to cut at the 7" mark, you can set the guide bar at 7 inches, then put your invitations against the bar and cut one right after the other without having to measure or even look at the ruler. The guide bar can be a time saver for repetitive cutting jobs, but you could get by without it by using the measurements on the ruler edge of the trimmer or the grid lines on the trimmer table.

Hold down
The hold down is a flat plexiglass bar that attaches to the trimmer with a metal clip. It is designed to hold your material steady as you cut it.

The Genesis trimmer was designed by a photographer, and he wanted the hold down to protect his film and photos from fingerprints. You could use a plastic ruler to accomplish either of these tasks, so if you have one of those already, you could probably do without this accessory.

  Replacement cutter wheel
You won't need a new cutter wheel for a long time, but with regular use, someday your cutter wheel will begin to show signs of wear. If you order a replacement cutter wheel with your trimmer, its weight doesn't affect shipping charges, so you can save shipping charges by having it delivered with your trimmer. Then, too, you will have it on hand when you do eventually need it.

How long does it take to receive a Genesis trimmer order?

Genesis is a very small, family-owned company, and they take incredible pride in building these products almost completely by hand. Because the company is so small, and the demand for Genesis trimmers is so huge, there is a very long waiting list for Genesis products.

These trimmers are extraordinary machines. They are made of the finest materials and built to last a lifetime. Our customers agree that owning and using a Genesis Trimmer is truly worth the wait!

When you place an order, the order goes into a queue, and orders are handled chronologically within each size category.

We do not run credit card charges until the trimmer is ready to ship.
